COVID-19 has affected practically every sector of society over the past year, and data has shown that the pandemic may have worsened existing gender inequality. Childcare demands changed for families, job markets fluctuated, and violence against women increased. The UN convened a committee and forum to combat the current gender inequality crisis to set clear goals and make a plan of action.
The 2021 Generation Equality Forum convened first in Mexico City and recently met again in Paris, France. Co-chaired by France and Mexico, the forum was a global collaboration between nations with the common goal to uphold human rights globally. The forum set a five-year plan in motion to achieve marked improvements for gender equality both in business and society. In addition to setting sustainable goals, the forum saw $40 billion in financial commitments to bring these plans to fruition by 2026. The five-year plan is founded on a Global Acceleration Plan which aims to fulfill the promises set by the Beijing Platform for Action. The organizations involved in forming and executing this forum include international feminist groups, nonprofits, grassroots activist organizations, political groups, and businesses from all walks of life. The proposed agenda will target gender-based violence, economic justice for gender equality, reproductive rights, climate justice, and feminist movements.
Women’s rights are human rights, and the UN has declared 2020-2030 as a “decade of action” for advancing sustainable, positive changes in every sector of society. The 2021 Generation Equality Forum was a groundbreaking step in the right direction for gender equality. The goals proposed are ambitious, sustainable, and measurable. There’s never been a better time to get involved with a non-profit, grassroots movement, or committee in your area. Learn more about the forum and how you can get involved here.
